Xmas 1945 - Proud as Punch Lady and Her Cat

Dad is sitting there, too, but he is doing what cats usually do - pretending no one is taking a picture.

Do I spy flashbulbs in the ash tray in the foreground?  Flash bulbs were really exciting for kids...there is a very distinctive sound to them going off!  And then you got to contemplate the used bulb which was covered with blisters of glass which had melted! Glass so hot it melted!  Wow!  I used to collect them as exotic artifacts of cataclysmic forces and wonder at the different bubbles and discolorations.   Whenever flashbulbs went square and had a bulb on 4 sides things got less exciting.  More George Jetson but less volcanic.

Xmas 1938 - Happy Little Girl and Her Kitty

That is a fantastic perambulator and dolly!  I wonder if kitty will find himself in there soon.

A Coincidence, and Cat and Kids in Cabinet Photo from Kansas

Just for fun I checked out 112 East Douglas Street to see what was there today.  I believe 112 is a parking garage with a black screen facade...a Darth Vader effect.

But look what was across the street!!!

A bronze sculpture of a girl and a cat.

I'll be darned.

What a Good Cat...

Being slung around by a determined little girl takes a special cat to go with the flow.

Mrs. Oscar Wilde and 3 Little Kittens...Who Knew!?

This is a beautiful children's book to enjoy reading to a child.

So there I was, looking for some 19th century kitty lit to amuse you and myself, when what do I find but a beautifully illustrated colorful children's book, There Once Was, from 1888 with a admirable illustration of those naughty little kittens.  But as I gathered the pictures and prepared to post I saw the frontispiece...

...and thought. "Mrs. Oscar Wilde?".   I am exposing a gap in my education but  truth will out.  (Does it count I read many of Quentin Crisp's work?)  But, the surprise aside, it is a wonderful book that should be read to little children.  Many of the famous stories are in it that are referred to in literature in many ways...but children I see at school do not know the old stories or nursery tales.  I feel sad they will be left out of a long chain of people who know the real Puss 'n Boots (and not just a cartoon puss in a Shrek movie).

Sunday Afternoon on the Porch with Kitty

Sunday dinner done, this couple had time to sit and have their photo taken with Kitty.

I like porch step photos.

Cat , Sunbeam, Bed - Perfection

This photo could become a relaxation aid.  Just remember to look at it every 20 minutes and you will become that centered, smiling individual you have always known was within you.

I may have even shared this photo before...but its worth a second relaxing deep breath as you contemplate the kitty comfort.

c. 1900 - The Cat and the Old Couple

Isn't this a fascinating photo!  Why are all three so far apart?
Someone is a gardener.

An Arm and A Cat - Twice

It would be amusing to collect photos of pets that include a persons arm :-)

Reading Cat Sets Great Example

This puss not only reads about mice, but has his own mouse buddy!

This makes a elementary school teacher's heart warm,
youngsters reading and making friends with folks different than themselves!

Sometimes putting up with friends can be a trial though...

Two Cats, One Parrot

Some photos allow you into another time and place as easily as an unlocked door gives access to your home.  These two photos, for me, have that quality.

The two cats contemplating Mr. Parrot's situation wouldn't mind an unlocked door I am sure!

1912 - No Smiles Here!

Nice photo, but I wonder why they chose it for the intermission.
While I think of it, did you notice the new cat story from 1850 in the tabs above?

Farm Cat and a 1930 Chevy

School just started here in Connecticut last Thursday. This photo seemed just the thing today!

It was mentioned that this was a 1930 Chevy...maybe it is.

Punch, Skin, and Trixy

This charming family portrait was taken in 1916.
They were the Schaeffer family cats.

I wonder which one is Skin...
...and why was it named Skin!??

1946 - Kito Regroups

I think we have all felt like this at one time.
You have been out and about jumping around like a wild kitty,
being assertive and out going,
 when all of the sudden
 sitting behind a wicker chair
seems a really good idea.

1916 - Two White Cats at Mrs. Brandt's in Fairbanks, Alaska

This is a beautiful photograph.  Just look at that garden!!!!

The cats can prowl between the cabbage leaves; an exotic green tangle of giant leaves.  Their long winter in front of the stove can be filled with dreams of the jungle.

I had to post it large as well so you can explore more easily!

I wonder how many plants Mrs. Brandt had in the house over winter?  She must of tried to have some house plants.

Fannie's Herman and Vermin

Fannie took this picture.  Such a look!!

Go to Wikipedia to read more about Fannie.  She was a fascinating woman!!
This was the courtyard where Herman and Vermin reigned supreme.

Frances "Fannie" Benjamin Johnston (15 January 1864 – 16 May 1952) was one of the earliest American female photographers and photojournalists.
"An independent and strong-willed young woman, she wrote articles for periodicals before finding her creative outlet through photography after she was given her first camera by George Eastman, a close friend of the family, and inventor of the new, lighter, Eastman Kodak cameras. She received training in photography and dark-room techniques from Thomas Smillie, director of photography at the Smithsonian."

Whaddya Lookin' At?

So... I'm in a pot.

Bob, the Tabby

This cat has gravitas.

Wonderful! Gentle, Clever Cat...

Great image, isn't it?  Makes me smile every time I look at it.  I get lost in the photo, thinking of what the spotted cat is thinking, feeling the amusement of the person in the window...on and on.

Are We Done Yet??

Cats broadcast impatience better than any creature.

Since cats couldn't care less about having their photo taken most of the time, the smiles of their proud owners are what make me enjoy these photos so much.

Ah, Summer...Beach Going With The Cat?

This cat is a good sport!

This cat, on the other hand, can not believe what is happening!
